40 breaks down to 4*10.. 10 breaks down to 5*2, while 4 breaks down to 2*2. Leaving: 2*2*2*5. Then put it how you need to finish the question.

I assume you want divisibility rules used here:
It's divisible by 2 since it ends in 0.
It's divisible by 4, since its last 2 digits(60) is a multiple
of 4.
It's divisible by 10 and by 5 because it ends in 0.
It's divisible by 9(and therefore by 3) because
the sum of its digits is divisible by 9 and therefore
by 3.

Divide 40 by 2 you get 20
Divide 20 by 2 you get 10
Divide 10 by 2 you get 5, which is prime.
So 40 = 2*2*2*5 = 2³*5.
