to Monique, titemoman & any other French women. I am an American and I've only met 1 French woman - whom I have fallen in love with. Can you share anything that might help me relate to besides the practical matters you expressed - French women's emotions, hopes, dream, desires, values where companion's are concerned beyond what has already been written here. MANY THANKS ladies! :-)

A better question would by why YOU think French women are unique, as an American. The difference lies in the fact that you must recognize where you are coming from, what ideas you have about American women, what your ideal woman is like, etc.

French women adhere to a different culture in which femininity and masculinity for that matter are strictly separated. A woman is expected to play up her femininity because that is "obviously" what she was born to be like, and what men want. It is the same for a man in France. The thing is, in the U.S. women have fought a good fight for equality and for the right to be seen as no less a woman for taking a man's job, deciding to keep her maiden name, dress the way she likes (in pants for example) and not be a stay-at-home mom if she wants to work instead. In France, a women's rights movement has never really existed except for a few fad years in the 60's. Women only make up 25% of the labor force there and they are given tax credits and pensions to stay at home and have children (no joke!).

So, you need to consider why you find them so unique or attractive by looking at the system they function within and the difference between that system (and consequently the people it produces) and ours.

The only thing I can think of is this:

About a year or so ago (maybe less) there was a program on television about how French women do not diet but tend to remain very slim. The woman (who has now written a book about this) on the program said French women's attitudes toward food is that they eat everything but eat in very small portions. I believe they said, too, that French women tend to walk more and use stairs more in their day-to-day lives as well.

It was stated that they don't think about dieting, their weight, or exercising. They just eat everything (including sweets) in tiny portions and include more exercise in their day-to-day lives.

Well, sparetom, I guess there are as many dreams, feelings and hopes as women. Every woman is unique, whether French, American, Chinese or else...
As a whole, French women tend to appreciate when men are galant and kind to them (try not to forget her birthday, the day you met, etc). They like men who are at the same time able to show their feelings and able to be kind of "macho", ie who can cry if they are sad, feed the baby, do the washing up AND fix the car's engine ;-) ...who don't let other men be rude to them... and let them girls paint the walls or fix the washing machine if they wish to do it ;-)
To sum it up, they need a man they can rely on but who also let them some freedom of movement...

I don't know how old you are, but there is something totally different in men-women relationships between France and the US : the "dating" system.
French girls have no code like no kiss at the 1st rendez-vous, having three rendez-vous before having sex or that kind of stuff. The "codes" we use are more "physical" and "personal" than "social".
Just try to guess her feelings and pay attention to her, nothing is written in a book ! First of all, be yourself and don't try to play a role.
I wish you plenty of happiness with your Frenchy!!!

French women are no more or less 'unique' than any other cultural, racial or national group.
