When I buy new clothes and my mom ends up washing them, they come out not feeling soft as they were before. Like for example, I have a pair of $50 American Eagle jeans that used to feel soft and nice before she washed them. Could it be that she is using cheap laundry detergent? All my clothes end up like this.

they are probably soft in the store b/c they have been tried on and folded and twisted many, many times...be happy your mom washes your clothes...you could try your own way of washing and see if you have the same results

It could be the soap. I used to live in an apartment with coin-operated washing machines that didn't rinse very well, and when I used powdered laundry detergent, it didn't always come all the way out, which would leave my clothes feeling somewhat stiff and gritty.

Also, line drying can make clothes feel extra dry and stiff, even if you use fabric softener in the wash.

I suggest using liquid laundry detergent, running an extra rinse cycle if possible (I didn't have that option at my apartment), machine drying, and using fabric softener. The fabric softener sheets that you put in the dryer work just fine for me, and I find them simpler to use than the liquid kind.

With jeans I double rise them, they seem not to rinse clean. The soap build up may be making them stiffer. Also, put dryer sheets in the dryer (or if line drying - put softener in the final rinse).

Make sure she adds fabric softener to the rinse cycle. That should help.

no its not the soap. How is she drying them? If shes air drying them, then it will be stiff. in the dryer, she may be over drying. fabric softner may help. a water softner could help.
