I'm writing up my phd in biosciences but don't want to stay doing university research as the pay, conditions and long term prospects don't look too good :(. Any suggestions and also how to do them (eg. go into industry)

you pretty much have to do a post-doc if you're planning to teach in biology, unless you can go straight into a professorship at a teaching college. you never know, a good post-doc might reinvigorate you in research (or confirm that you're ready to do something else). i heard there is no shortage of post-doc positions, but this may be because the pay is still really low.

There are some good government jobs out there (e.g. USGS, Dep. of Interior, National Park Service). They have decent pay and good benefits.

i'll be in the same boat soon. isn't it sad you can have so much training and expertise and still have such terrible work prospects?

By now you should have some experiences working in the field. Can your profs or those on your Dissertation Committee give you some ideas?

You may want to start writing up your curriculum vitae right away and have your advisers look it over.

Industry may be a good way to go. Are you willing to move to where the jobs are?

I am not sure how to go about looking for jobs in this field (I was in liberal arts). Teaching may be the way to go until you can find something more permanent. Good luck.

Dear Andrew,

Are you seriously telling me that you have been in the University "womb" all these years and have never spoken with your adviser about what's next, or talked to some of their counseling staff about where your prospects might show up? Have you not attended any recruiting opportunities? Did you not believe that you would ever graduate?

Darlin' child, get BUSY. You have lived in books and now it's time to apply all that wonderful learning to Life!! Go to your adviser and your counselor. Talk to some people already doing what you want to do and ask them for advice. You have a lot to do with your wonderful knowledge... get going, hon!! Good luck.

Biosciences? If you want some bigger money, work research at some big corporate drugs company (or something similar). If you want intrigue (well, a little bit of intrigue), work for something like the Centre for Disease Control...

Or... teach university or college!

PhD potential well being care provider of philosphy. as that's the abbreviation for the Latin "Philosophia well being care provider" so that's written as PhD particularly than DPh! in addition well being care provider of drugs and surgical treatment is written as MBBS particularly than DMDS!! Philosphers take lot of time to learn and understand diverse innovations, ideals and theories correct to a undertaking so grasp in any field would properly be presented with PhD degree. yet pay attention of philosophizing anthing as that's a derogatory notice!

Contact your school's employment office (or whatever they call it) and see if they can help you out on your job search. Ask your professors if they know anyone in industry that can give you some pointers or help you get your foot in the door for job interviews (even in this day and age, it's often who you know and not what you know that gets you a good job). Send out your resume to companies that interest you. Look on monster.com or other jobs sites for employers that are hiring people with your background and education.
