He said "MLK was about service, its not a day off, its a day on". Is this his way of saying the government isnt going to honor MLK day in the future?

I highly doubt it. The president can't "cancel" existing federal holidays, only congress can do that, and a democratic congress would never do that.

I think he's just saying that we shouldn't look at these holidays as days to goof off and do nothing, but that we should take the opportunity (day off from school/work) to give back to our community.

Who knows what George Bush is saying half the time. He's out of there at the end of next year anyway. I'm sure MLK day will be on next year's calendar as well. The president can't erase what MLK did so he's not going to stop honoring the day. No worries.
