There are two cheap paperbacks called "Njal's Saga" and "Laxdaela Saga." They are set down in writing in Iceland about 1250. The stories are now recognized as a lot fiction. But the characters are historical, and the stories were traditional oral stories. The stories take place from 830 to 1000. So there may be a lot of daily life. This is because the readers would recognize anything that was baloney.

One detail is the overland journey of a groom's party to the bride's farm for the marriage and bringing the bride back to the groom's farm. The saga writer says that the party made an impressive site as they rode: "Many of the guests wore colored clothing." So that says that dyeing of cotton or wool was a big deal.

"Njal's Saga" has a lot about the oral customary law, the conduct of legal business, and trial of lawsuits.
