If two people dream a cat (for e.g.), that doesn't mean that it symbolizes the same thing. Dreams are interpreted taking into account ones life / experiences / background / etc. The most appropriate person to interpret your dream is you!
Don't forget though that there are many kinds of dreams! I'll give you a few examples:
There are times when you just dream mixed up episodes of your daily life (persons, places you've visited, actions, movies that you've watched etc).
Other dreams reveal what is hidden in your subconscious (things like hidden desires, fears, censored feelings etc). This is another good way of analyzing yourself.
There are also premonitory dreams and dreams about past events (ones you knew nothing about).
