I was thinking about it the other day as today approached. He isn't really considered a philosopher but I think he was because he had new ideas and something new to say. If someone asked me who my favorite philosopher was, I would probably say Martin Luther King.

More than a philosopher he was an activist. He puts his ideas, principles, and beliefs into actual accomplishments. If we take the narrow definition of a philosopher, they tend to discuss various views of an issue. Their work is theoretical; they do not put it into practice. An activist puts their views into practice, giving their ideas dimension.

Cordova may be onto something here. I was going to say no, but that depends on your personal definition of philosopher. He definitely had a passion for the truth, and was able to make others see the truth. In that regard he was a philosopher.

What new ideas did MLK have? He was a passionate activist and profoundly caring public figure who advanced racial equality and progressive politics in America, but I cannot think of a new idea attributable to him. Indeed, sadly enough, he turns out to have plagiarized significant portions of his dissertation in graduate school.
