I mean - what kind of 'day' could that possibly mean.. ?

Isn't one day pretty much like the next when you're a dog.. certainly they have no benchmark for pinnacle of success, as implied in the expression..

Here dog and day need not necessarily relate to an animal and a 24 hour period.
The expression means that one cannot assume that his fortune would hold out forever, and that there comes a time when others too would experience their good times and ours would end.

I've always wondered about that as well. Heck, a well cared for dog has a pretty darn good life. There are times I look at how we humans pamper them and I'm like..."Bring it on. Feed me, let me crap in the neighbors yard, and rub my belly occasionally...that's all I need to be happy!" So if we apply that logic to the expression, wouldn't that be a good thing to wish for...cause if every dog has his day, I'd really like a belly rub about now.

The expression is'nt literally referring to dogs. It can mean for example, that a person treats you like crap. And in the back of your mind, your saying..That's ok, every dog has it's day.another words. You know this person is going to get what's coming to them. It's kinda like karma. Or revenge.

They mean everyone has their great moment - not necessarily true.
