It depends what you mean - democracy failed.

In some ways, democracy has never failed. The voters always choose their leaders. It is true that with the electoral college, there have been instances where the person who receives the popular vote did not become president (see, George Bush II election in 2000).

Or, perhaps an example of democracy failing would be in 1860 (civil war) when rather than work things out in congress and through a peaceful process, the sides took up arms and fought over seccession (brought on by the south feeling trampled on in another areas).

The great solution of democracy is that it allows a peaceful resolution of issues. And yet, there must also be a protection of the rights of the majority.

In a sense, democracy ALWAYS fails. The majority of people in America would say that everyone should be required to stand for the pledge of allegiance or the star spangled banner. After all, there are only a few people who either (a) do not believe in god ("one nation, under god ..."), or (b) believe that standing for a flag is worshipping a "graven image." And yet, the right of these people to hold their beliefs, and not be required to stand simply because their beliefs are different fthan the majorty, must be protected. In protecting the rights of the minority, democracy "fails," and yet it is only by protecting the rights of EACH individual that true democracy can flourish.

Perhaps, democracy failed in 1789, when the constitution was passed, as Women were not allowed to vote, and blacks were not allowed to vote (indeed, they did not even count as full people for cencus purposes).

So ... when did democracy fail?

Because we are a republic, not a democracy. A democracy is based on majority rule. Two foxes and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner is a good example of a democracy. The minority has no rights in a democracy.

In a republic, the will of the majority is restrained by a Constitution. The Constitution limits what government can and cannot do. In our Constitution, Congress is given specific powers (Article 1, Section 8). If you look at the Bill of Rights (the first ten amendments to the Constitution) you will see some of the Rights that American citizens are guaranteed: freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, right to keep and bear arms, freedom from unreasonable search, right to trial by jury & c). The Tenth Amendment says that any power not specifically authorized by the Constitution (in Article 1, Section 8) is prohibited, and left to the states or the people. For example, education is not mentioned in Article 1, Section 8, as a specified power of Congress. The Tenth Amendment therefor says that the federal government has NO role in education - it is left to the states of the people. And yet, we have a federal Department of Education. This is in violation of our Constitution. It is un-Constitutional.

In a democracy, congress could do whatever it wished, by simple majority. In our republic, all our politicians take an oath to the Constitution. By the way, in Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution, Congress guarantees each state a REPUBLICAN form of government. This has nothing to do with the Republican Party. It means republic is our form of government - not democracy.

Trick question the US is not a Democracy it never has been. Read Article IV section 4 of the Constitution of the United States. And when you discover our form of government try and find the differences between our governmental form with democracy.

As far as I remember, it never failed. We still live in a Democracy. Are you sure this is for a project? Because I really don't think the school would teach that. Or is this just to see what kind of responses you will get?

If Senate Bill 1, Section 220 of the Ethics Bill Passes on tomorrow, you can set the date Democracy failed.

This bill will abridge your right to redress and stop you from emailing, faxing, writing or calling your elected officials. They do not want to hear from you anymore about illegal immigration, human civil rights, sovereinty as a nation, the Borders security, taxes etc...etc..

Call today before it is too late! 1-800-459-1887 or directly 202-224-3121. Or call their offices in your home states.
