Which way lets the condemned die with less emotional distress ?

There are 2 ways to be hanged... "death by hanging" and "hanging until dead",
In death by hanging the knot is put to the side of the head and the neck is broken immediatly. In hanging until dead the knot is put to the back of the head and you dangle there until you suffocate/ choke. Either way, including your head being yanked off, The brain still receives stimulas /pain and they eyes still function so you experience most of it even after you are "dead". None is very good, but a quick neck break would seem to cause less emotional distress.

It's best if the neck snaps, killing the person immedately but the head stays on.
If the rope is too long in relation to the weight of the condemned the head will pop off. If the rope is too short in relation to the weight of the condemned the neck won't snap and they hand until they suffocate, which can be 5-10 minutes.

For the hanged person, there is not difference. In both cases the neck snaps and the person dies instantly.
For the bystanders, it is preferable for the head to stay on. It looks less gruesome and requires less cleanup.

gee i don't plan to be hanged so i dont think about it much, however, i have seen and im not lying, that in some countrys when they decapitated people way back, they would use the guys head as a soccer ball. Imagine that!

I don't think it matters much because someone isn't really ready for the standard funeral home type viewing if they died from a hanging. In my opinion, it shows a lack of professionalism if you pop the head off.

Gruesome thought...but what difference does it make when you are condemned to hang for crimes against humanity? In that's case, nothing is too gruesome.

Pop off is best I think no guess work that you died fast that way. Kinda takes the guess work out of hmm did they suffer are they dead.
