Also, why do people call San Fransisco "Frisco." Are they just stupid or do they don't care that they say it wrong?

It's a pet-peive of mine. I'm not worried about it, just curious - I can sure tell that they aren't Californians!

Well....As a California Native....I have NEVER called it "Cali"....and I never heard ANYONE call Orange County the "OC"......

I have heard California referred to as ~ "The Land of Fruits & Nuts"
Generally, that is in reference to San Fransisco or West Hollywood..

Now....I have heard Hollywood referred to as ~ "Hollyweird" and if you have every been there you will know why.....

I live in California and I don't really care. But i have a long name also, and I always let people call me by whatever nickname strike them as suitable for me. I always thought it gives me some insight into how the person feels about me. Like if they shorten it to its most intimate smallness, they feel close and comfortable with me. If they keep it at it's longest, maybe a little more respectful. Both are ok with me, see?

The same reason people don't call it the United States of America all the time.

"Cali" and "Frisco" are nicknames for California and San Fransisco. They are mispronunciations of either place. Nicknames come from many places, and many other cities have nicknames as well. "The Big Apple" (not a mispronunciation of New York), "Philly", "Beantown", "Chi-town", "L.A." Nicknames may be used to shorten a name or show a personal connection to that city.

Relax, it's not that people are stupid or don't care, it's just a nickname...now, pronounce the "S" on Illinois, that will drive an Illini (person from Illinois) crazy, because that is a mispronunciation.

Frisco is a slang name that was adopted decades ago - not by San Franciscans but by Easterners - thinking they were sounding hip.

Cali appears to be a shortening adopted via the internet.....as I had never heard it used before internet communication and web shorthand became the menu of the day.

Strange that you say that they must not be Californians... I was born there to a second generation californian and I have heard "cali" Since I was a kid. It may be a regional thing though because I have noticed that those who live in the northern half of the state tend to be a bit snobby and have a dislike for common things... like nicknames.

Life must be good if these are your biggest problems. By the way, it is San Francisco, not Fransisco...are you stupid or don't you care that you spell it wrong??? Don't sweat the small stuff..you will live longer.

It's just a shortened pet name. Just like people calling Pennsylvania "PA" and Los Angeles "LA"

I live in Syracuse NY and everyone here calls it the 'Cuse for short. It's no worse than calling people by shortened nicknames!

I don't call it Cali, and I live in Calif.
