soccer - because it's non-stop running with frequent direction changes.

American football is 10 minutes of action seperated by 50 minutes of standing around slapping each other on the fanny.

Don't get me wrong, soccer is the most boring sport in the world, I hate it. Just happens to be the one that I think requires the highest level of athletic conditioning to play.

Got to go with baseball on this one. There is a lot of strategy involved, it is not just 9 players (10) if American League, hitting the ball and catching it. They have to constantly be aware of signals coming from various coaches etc. They have to hit the ball ina certian direction or pitch a certian pitch to a batter. Very complicated, even before they hit the field they are studying the other teams players as individuals and how to play them. When to take a player out or keep him in, any wrong choice can change the outcome of the game. Baseball is a physical and extremly mental game. They have to be in great shape all aroundl.

Athleticism and/or athletic ability can be measured by over 100 different attributes.

For example:

SPEED is the ability to ACCELERATE measured by, for example, a 40 yd. dash

AGILITY is the ability to have BALANCE and FLEXIBILITY while starting, stopping, and changing direction and can be measured by cone drills, etc...

Then there's ENDURANCE, with subheadings of MUSCLE ENDURANCE, SPEED ENDURANCE, and both AEROBIC and ANAEROBIC ENDURANCE.

Factor everything in and, in my opinion, the best athletes (combining athletic attributes and SIZE) are NBA Forwards and NFL Defensive Ends

The most difficult sport?
Hitting a baseball is no day at the beach.
