i drive a Fiat Punto, over last week it has been struggling to start (especially when cold). When I turn the ignition the engine does not turn over and I can hear a whineing sound which I think is the starter motor? I don't think it will be the battery as I only changed that last year..

I can get car started after a few attempts. I want to know if this is something I can easily fix myself, or what needs done.

Cheers

if engine will not do anything and you hear the starter whining , then it will start. you may have a bad starter. what happens is a couple of teeth will break off the starter gear and it wont start it. rotate the starter and sometimes will start. Eventually it will go altogether. Should be easy to replace

Sounds like your starter, as well as broken starter gear teeth or internal damage, it could also be loose or broken starter mounting bolts. I suggest you check the bolts first.

I agree with Corey, it sounds like the alternater if it's not the battery.. It's usually an easy fix.
