I've never been there, but am strongly considering a trip this summer for about 1-1.5 weeks. I'm from KY, so I guess I'm not that much of a "snowbird" (lol); nevertheless, I like hot weather.
To anybody who lives, has lived, or visited there, what is the place like? I mean, traffic, attractions/"must-do" things, nightlife, the people (are they friendly?) (My dad has been to Houston on business trips and remarked about the friendliness of Houstonians, part of the reason I want to go.)
Thanks! And by the way, Go Astros!

I've lived here all my life and often wonder why so many people have moved here. It's flat, hot, and humid. There's a shortage of nice parks and the it seems there's and endless stretch of low-rent shopping centers.
I do have to agree on the friendliness. In my travels, I often wonder why persons in other parts of the country seem to come across as jerks.
To me, most of the "must do's" for Houston aren't all that interesting. If you enjoy history, I'd recommend a trip to the San Jacinto Monument and then on to Galveston. You would have to see both to get an idea what happened at the Battle of San Jacinto and during the Hurricane of 1900. The Battleship and Galveston's sites would also be a plus. Otherwise, you won't find much history left in Houston. We paved over most of it years ago.
I've also always liked our Hermann park, even if only for a walk,
We have world-class theatres; but our museums aren't all that impressive. The sports venues, including Minutemaid, are all top-notch and there are several areas for club hopping, including downtown. You probably want to check out the rodeo and livestock show if your visit hits around that time.
Traffic is a mess during our long rush hours; but not the endless grid-lock that some seem to describe.
In my discussions with others about Houston, here's what seems to stand out:
Restaurants - the variety and quality of the food for our moderately priced restaurants is known Nation-wide.
Golf - you can play year round on some very fine courses
Fishing - you're a short jaunt from either saltwater or lake fishing.
In summary, if you just enjoy a simple adventure in seeing new things; you would probably have a good 1 1/2 weeks.

Houston is a okay city. They have semi-friendly people depending on the part your visit. We used to have a six-flags but that got closed so there isn't much to do besides shopping. The downtown area I have heard is nice, so if you do decide to visit, make sure to go to downtown.

its the city so its a give an take on the friendliness there...there's not that much to go do there but shop. If you do go you must go Kema island that will take a full day there. But better have some money on you when you go.
Hope you have fun

Houston is about the fourth largest city in the U.S. so there is plenty of traffic, crime, nightlife, attractions, etc... Compared to most cities of it's size, it is pretty friendly.
