1. to sterilize anything that might need sterilizing,
2. to get that person in the kitchen and out of the way!!

We had a planned home birth. I think they used it to make hot compresses (cloth) to put on me after to help with tearing. It's not for sterilizing hands, it would burn hands! I read one book where there was a very unhelpful father present and they put him in charge of something like that to keep him busy and make him feel useful.

I think it's just to kill any germs on the 'deliver-er's" hands. But that's just my guess. Don't forget "lot's of towels, too"

To sterilize something to cut the cord. (Knife, scissors, etc.)


If you're having a PLANNED homebirth with a midwife there's no water boiling involved. :-)
