I know the kid already got rid of it. Can the cops do anything if they dont find it at his house or him riding it?

No evidence no crime. Assaulting him is not a good idea.

What they CAN do isn't always what they WILL do. They rarely put much interest into stolen bikes. Heck, I had checks stolen and forged, and I knew who did it. But the cops claimed "insufficient evidence" to pursue the case! They won't bother unless you can produce witnesses who actually saw the bike being taken. And even then, if it doesn't turn up, they'll usually just do some paperwork and push it aside to chase the drug-dealers and prostitutes. They have things they'd rather be doing, and there's not much we can do to get them to look into our cases if they don't care to. That's a sad fact but unfortunately true. Maybe you could claim a stripper took it, or that there was a million dollar bill rolled up and stuck under the saddle? Without something to stimulate them, they often don't give a fig.

Don't take law into your own hands. Inform the cops. It is their duty to recover the bike. If they do not find it on the kid who took it, they have their investigative methods to trace the bike.

Call them, have them come over, and identify it.

If someone can corroborate, like your parents, have them come with you.

If you put an identifying mark on the bike, like your name or added a unique piece of equipment, like an ooga horn (my son has one), that helps, too.
