This can be solved by performing regular maintenance. Free solutions exist that are as good as the commercially sold ones. The biggest difference is that the free ones are more manual, meaning you need to run them yourself, while the commercially sold solutions can be set to automatically scan and do the maintenance on a set schedule.

The best free ones are: AVG Antivirus, Adaware (Spyware Removal), CCleaner (Crap Cleaner), and Zone Alarm (Firewall). AVG has autoprotect which works well, Adaware needs to be run manually to remove Spyware. Zone Alarm is a free firewall which blocks intrusion attempts better then the Windows firewall. I run Crap Cleaner once a week on my machine to clean out temporary files left behind by applications, cookies, and temporary Internet files.

If you want to try a commercial application, Mcafee Viruscan Plus works well. It includes Antivirus, Spyware Removal, and Firewall. Protection only lasts for 1 year though, in which you would need to buy it each year. Norton works too but hogs system resources.

yes, unless you do a virus scan on a regular basis...have a good firewall and also a good spyware program, than you are in danger...these programs cannot guarantee that a new virus won't come out before the programs can get a healer for them.
BUT, although this sounds bad, as long as she is not going to odd sites, you should be fine
