11 players on the field for each team on offense and defense, 22 total per play. At the start of the game, the team that wins the coin flip chooses whether to receive the ball at the start of the game, or kick to the other team at the start, and get it after halftime. Kickoffs occur at the start of the game, after halftime, and after either team scores.
Scoring: There are 3 types of scoring in football. The touchdown is when a team gets the ball into the end zone they are aiming for, through a catch or run. common, worth 6 points. after TD, the scoring team can either kick the ball through the uprights for an additional 1 point(very common), or try to get the ball in the end zone again from the two yard line for 2 points (very rare, used mainly when trying to catch up to other team, and in desperate need of points)
The field goal is when a team has their kicker kick the ball through the uprights(Y shaped metal bars. common, worth 3 pints
The safety is when team b's defense tackles the player on team A with the ball in Team As own endzone. rare, and worth 2 points
Offense: a team has 4 tries to get 10 yardseach try is called a down. if, after 4 tries, team A fails to convert for 10 yards, team B gets the ball right where team A last had it. If, after 3 tries, Team A doesn't want to take chance on 4th down, (when if they miss, they will lose the ball), they can punt the ball, where the punter catches the ball from throguh the legs of a player at the line of scrimmage (yard-line where last play ended) tosses it up in the air about a foot, and kicks it to the other end of the field. when team A is punting, team b puts a player at the other end of the field, and that player will catch the punt, and either attempt to return it the other way, or call a fair catch, where the other team can't tackle him, and team B gets the ball right where their player caught it.
Offensive positions: Quarterback-throws the ball to receiver
Wide receiver-catches quarterback's throws
Running Back - QB hands off or tosses ball to him, and he runs as far as he can
Fullback - blocks other players from tackling RB
Tight End - like a wide receiver, only slower and tougher, used to get short yardage more than for long gains.
Offensive Lineman - prevent defense from tackling QB

Defense: Team A is now on defense. Team B can throw or Run. If team b decides to throw, team A can intercept the ball, or, in other words catch the other team's QB's throw, and try to return it for a TD. They can also sack the QB, or, in other words, tackle him behind the line of scrimmage. another defensive play is when the offensive player in possession of the ball fumbles, or loses possession of the ball, at which point the ball is free game, and whoever picks it up recovers it, and gives possession to their offense if the defense recovers, or retains possesion if the offense recovers.
Defensive players: Corner backs-cover wide receivers to try to prevent them from catching the ball
Safeties-go deep downfield, assist CB's in preventing pass completions
Linebackers - usually stay near line of scrimmage, try to sack QB or prevent long running plays.
Defensive Lineman. Right at line of scrimmage, try to sack QB.

Special Teams - Kicking - covers kickoffs, field goals, and extra pints(after TD's.)
Punting - already explained.

Penalties are also applied to either team based on many reasons, some of which are holding(holding of opponent), false start(going past line of scrimmage before ball is snapped), and pass interference(prevention of another player of having a chance to catch the ball ex: tackling a player before the ball gets there, which takes out any chance of him catching it). Penalties applied by referees.

Plays can also be challenged by either head coach. ex: palyer makes a sideline catch, but ruled out of bound by referees on the grounds that one foot was out of bounds. head coach can challenge ruling. if overturned, team gets ball at that spot. if ruling stands, team theat challenged originally loses 1 timeout.

This pretty much covers everything. I know its lengthy, but football is a tough sport to understand. hope this helps!

Well, do you even want to play football? Personally, I love it, I played football since I was a little kid and all the way through college. But I admit, its not a sport for everyone. Football is a huge commitment. As its probably the most intense sports you'll ever play. If you should choose to play, prepare yourself for a lot of physical and mental conditioning. And once you're on the team, remember, that all the guys you play with will be counting on you, as well as you counting on them.

If you really think this is a game you could envision yourself playing, then just talk to the coaches. Tell them that you are willing to learn the game, but that you just don't know much about it. That's what they're there for. As a wide receiver you will be asked to catch the football down the field, block somebody when it's a running play (that's when the Quarterback hands the ball to somebody, versus throwing it). Despite what people may think, this isn't a game for dummies. It requires a lot of intelligence to play the game.

Like I said, I love this sport, and I think it's a great way to build self confidence, good leadership skills, and camaraderie amongst your fellow players. As well as staying in a great physical shape. I really hope that you decide to stick with it. And that you end up loving the game like I have. Good luck to you!

When you're on offense, you want to progress the ball towards the goal that you are facing either by running with it and avoiding being tackled or having the quarterback throw it to you, and then running towards the goal until you get knocked down.

On defense, you want to stop the guy with the ball, preventing them from making forward progress towards their goal.

Every time the offense progresses 10 yards, they get a first down and another 4 attempts to make it 10 yards more. If they fail to make it a total of 10 yards from where they started after 4 tries, the ball is turned over to the other team at the place on the field. Of course, most teams will punt on fourth down in order to get the ball as far away from the opposing goal as possible.

It's way more complicated than that, but that's it in a nutshell. I'm sure you can find all the rules on the internet somewhere. Good luck.

All you have to do is memorize the plays the coach has. Don't worry about not knowing how to play that's why you have practice. Remember always run the same direction that you are lined up to at the line of scrimage. Catch the ball and avoid getting tackled. Cover the ball like its your child, you don't want to be known as a butterfingers. Good Luck!

lol. that's hilarious. I would just watch some football games on tv. try to rent some or something. you'll figure it out easy that way. also go to the coach and say, hey man, i have no idea what I'm doing. don't be afraid to talk to someone about it... you'll look like a bigger fool if you go out there and don't know what your doing, so you might as well jut ask someone. and lastly, just fake it until you make it!! that's what my mom always told me to do when i had no idea what i was doing.

stick with it!! you could have fun and make a lot of new friends! not to mention you might get a girl out of it too. girls like football players ;)

That's hilarious! If you don't want to play than just say you don't want to, they'll understand. If you do want to play, however, just tell the coach it was a fluke and you know nothing about the sport. You could be one of those people they make a movie about after his team wins the super bowl. Like the guy on the movie Invincible (that was based on a true story you know). Go for it dude!

man why couldn't that have been me? anyway making the football team is big and when i say big i mean BIG!! a wide receiver is someone who catches the ball, going back to the football you caught.basically you want to get the football 100 yards across the field to a touchdown.that's really all i can explain about football( i suck at explaining). well if anyone asks who your favorite player is say one of these: Shaun Alexander, Cadillac Williams, Clinton Portis, Chad Johnson, Reggie Bush, Deuce(ha ha)McAllister(don't say ha ha in the middle), or Peyton Manning. sorry it's my first time writing a response

A wide reciever is someone who run routes on the field and catches the ball. A running back is the person who normally runs the ball but is good for screen passes. Screen passes are short little drop offs a QB makes to a person near them and then that person who the QB throws to has to try and get down feild before their tackled. If you need more tips go to:
