1 1/2 div 5/12
= 3/2 div 5/12
= 3/2 multiply 12/5
= (3*12)/(2*5)
= 36/10
= 18/5
= 3 3/5

First convert 1 1/2 to an "improper" fraction. It will be 3/2. To divide fractions, write the divisor as a reciprocal. Thus 5/12 becomes 12/5. Now multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. Multiply the 3 by 12 and get 36. Multiply the 2 by 5 and get 10. The answer is 36/10. But wait! There's more!! Reduce 36/10 to lowest terms by dividing each by the largest number possible. This is the Greatest Common Factor or GCF. In this number 36 and 10 are both only divisible by 2. So 36 divided by 2 is 18 and 10 divided by 2 is 5. Thus the final answer is 18/5. Need a "proper" fraction? Then divide 18 by five. It goes in just 3 times with a remainder of 3. So.... the final final final answer is 3 3/5.

May,
There is a specific procedure to follow:
1. Change any mixed fractions to improper ones.
1 1/2 = 3/2
So the equation then reads: 3/2 divided by 5/12
2. The rule for dividing fractions is --> you can't, but you can change it into a multiplication problem by changing the 2nd number into it's reciprocal:
3/2 x 12/5 =
3. The rule for multiplying fractions is multiply straight across.
3/2 x 12/5 = 36/10
4. Now reduce the fraction into lowest terms. You know 36/10 can be reduced because they are both even numbers.
36/10 = 18/5
Hope that helps! Most math can be reduced down to simple procedures. Learn them and you will far ahead of most!
Good luck!

1 1/2 divided by 5/12
1 1/2 = 3/2, so
3/2 divided by 5/12
if you are dividing by a fraction, you can bring the fraction up by inverting and multiplying, so--
3/2 x 12/5 = 36/10 = 3 6/10 or 3 3/5

think of 1 1/2 in twelfths to match the 5/12. One is 12/12, one half is 6/12, so you have 18/12 divided by 5/12 or 18 divided by 5, which is 3 and 3/5ths. Understanding it is important. dont just look to copy someone else's work.

1 1/2 is 3/2
to divide by a fraction, invert and multiply
to multiply fractions, multiply numerators and denominators separately.
so, multiplying 3/2 by 12/5 gives you 36/10, or 3.6
