Usually, school reporters write about stuff that happens at school, like meetings, activities and such. Or, you could get ideas from those at your school, like teachers, students, counsellors, and coaches. Do you write everything for the paper, or do you have a special column? Some school papers have an advice column, which can be fun. And being that winter has just started, there may be lots of activities going on outside of your school. Check your local newspaper for upcoming events that you can include in your paper, especially those that the student body would enjoy. Keep your eyes and ears open for news-worthy things. It doesn't have to be all serious, and you can even use things like Reader's Digest to find funny stories or corny jokes as fillers. Give a variety, for it's the spice of life! <*)))><

I think it would be interesting have an article, maybe followed by student opinions on the shift in the US, especially since the 1970s to less privacy for individuals and more government secrecy (security vs. privacy) This is really a fact of life and those who are students today will be most affected by it-but at the same time may not realize this is happening. I don't see this as a political football-rather that it is a decision being made-and do younger people agree with it?

write about things relevant to your school or things that kids at your school would care about. Examples are writing about your school's athletic teams and their games or clubs kids might be interested in joining. You could profile someone at your school who's interesting such as someone who really excels in athletics or art or music. Also, the teachers can be interesting -- interview a teacher, so kids can get to know them better as a person.
What's going on in your community thats of interest to young people is good. Are there any local bands that will be playing somewhere that kids would want to go see or is there a church youth group doing something cool? How about movies -- you can go to a movie and do a review of it. Fashion is another thing that's a good topic, lots of kids care a lot about how to dress.
It's always really popular in school newspapers to do something where you ask the same question to maybe 5 - 10 kids and then print their answers next to their picture. There's a lot you can ask like what do you do in your spare time or more controversial issues like what do you think of illegal immigration

Ask students about what they feel should be in the paper, or any issues they are concerned with. That should give you a little bit of a starting ground. Perhaps you could do a "Student of the Month" column and highlight someone in your school who deserves recgonition (not the popular kids) for something. Or even an advice column (just be sure people know its for fun only).
Good luck

New Years is still fresh on people's minds, perhaps you could write a piece regarding progress on New Year's Resolutions (or lack thereof)? If not, try and recall any recent wacky events that have happened at your school (no matter how insignificant). I love reading about the crazy things that some people do when they're at school and bored out of their minds.

Interview some students about their concerns: homework, tests, graduation, money for college, fear of being drafted, etc. Do some thinking.
