I went into my local 'convenient' store yesterday to pick up a few things. My bill came to about £4.00 and I paid with a £20 but the shopkeeper only gave me £6 change. I told him he had made a mistake but he insisted that I had only given him a £10 note. He refused to check his till and the camera behind the till that would show him quite clearly what I had given him. The shop is a local family-owned place, so obviously doesn't have the normal complaint channels. What are my rights? I can't just let it go beacause, apart from anything else, I believe he knew what he was doing. I know I could just not go there anymore but that isn't the point.

I know I had a twenty because I withdrew it just before I went into the store and have the bank statement to prove it. I am not so rich that I can be forgetful about what money I have.

I would report it to the Police. It will probably not get you any where but when other shoppers see him being questioned over this he is sure to lose more business than the tenner he conned you out of.
Please don't go breaking the law yourself to get back at him though, it really is not worth it.
Simply by telling your friends and neighbours what a crook he is will cost him in future business and hurt him just as much without you risking a criminal conviction

Put it down to experience, cause theres nothing you can do once youve walked away from the till. The guy obviously knew you and knew you wouldnt argue it out. Youve got a computer, so presumably a printer..? Run off a few hundred copies of, "Have You Checked Your Change..? " and a severe bad mouthing of the premises. Leave these placed around wherever you live, sit back and watch the fun. P.S. Making the literature look official with fake rubber stamps etc. is always a good idea.

Two things I can suggest. First one is to get in touch with the local police and tell them. They will go in and this may 'persuade' him to check his cctv tapes
alternatively, the other thing you can do is write or print out some leaflets describing what happened here, and stand outside his shop (make sure you are on the public highway, not the shops bit of pavement) handing them out to all his customers at busy times of day. This is perfectly legal providing you dont use any offensive or threatening terms. Once you have done this you will probably find him falling over himself to give you your £10 back!!

are you sure you gave him a twenty ,because normally the shop keeper would put the note on a clip on top of the till or in a tray without putting the note clip down so they know if this occurence takes place. Actually i think hes more likely to be correct and your in the wrong because he has precedures and you dont.Do you really think the guy would risk his businesses respect for a tenner .... i dont think so. Sorry i sound a bit harsh but this used to happen to me in my shop and the people used to insist it was me and i knew i was right because of the reasons i stated earlier.

the reason the shopkeepers were not arrested is they did not commit against the law. because you're interior the united kingdom i recognize the regulations will be diverse for you, yet to equate it to the same difficulty, the following in usa in case you come back on my resources with the reason to do something unlawful i'm allowed to apply any pressure I deem mandatory as a lot as and consisting of deadly pressure with the intention to guard myself and my resources. i'm confident the same regulation got here into play with the shopkeepers protecting their resources, prosperity, and keep. at the same time as interior the united kingdom guns are literally not allowed to the final public those shopkeepers used the subsequent suitable aspect they'd accessible to them, truly martial arts mastery. also why did you factor out the time period Muslim? How is that suitable in any respect to the problem? i am going to inform you for a undeniable reality that it is not suitable and that you're in simple terms attempting to attraction to the racists that infect our community and get sympathy on your view. nicely I for one will inform you sir that you're showing racist attitudes the following and that could not called for nor does it have an section in our community. In all i'm attempting to assert that i do not believe you and by no skill will, good day sir. EDIT: also to cite what you stated: "pondering the time of day of this placed up can human beings please be conscious that interior the united kingdom it truly is illegitimate to attack or shoot someone except less than certain circumstances the position your man or woman safe practices should be less than danger" You truly stated that "interior the united kingdom it truly is illegitimate to ... shoot someone." So for sure i recognize extra about uk regulation than you do and also you supposedly stay there (subsequently your posting from Y/A uk), Sir i'm from the deep south interior america of usa, gun possession is second nature down the following. notwithstanding interior the united kingdom gun possession is distinctly unlawful until eventually you're interior the protection pressure and then even then (get this from my buddy interior the united kingdom military) Non officials interior the protection pressure arent even allowed to take their guns living house with them. by technique of those 2 data there we've eradicated a good 80-ninety 5% of the inhabitants of the united kingdom it truly is legally allowed to own a gun in any respect. next time try now to not sound like a finished fool.

You have no rights, unless you had a witness present then its your word against his.

I wouldnt bother with it, just dont shop there anymore. Buy a douzen egg and egg his shop at night - better still put a brick through his window if you are really pissed off about it!

If you believed he had deliberately swindled you, the police should have been called. It would have been interesting to see if he stood his ground then? Especially with cctv available!
