and do you need a wireless router or can it just connect to an available open broadband connection via wifi card?

The wi-fi usb adapter is about $40 depending where you go it can vary like $5 less/more. All you need for it to work is a broadband Internet access; the adapter creates a wireless signal.

Nintendo's official store has it for around $35, so this is about what it will cost in stores too.

If your have a home network already, with a wireless router, then the Wii will go online without any special adapters. If you don't have a home network, then the adapter will allow your Wii to go online without a router once you plug it in and install the drivers on your PC.

I think that you can get it for $1 buck because the low quality that nintendo always seems to offer and will continue offering.
