I've been talking about success with my kids, and we've looked at books by people who've accomplished really BIG things. But what I really want is examples from people like us who have done something that was really good for them.
So please share your long three pointer (swish). Your BIG success. How did you do it? What lead to it? What was hard about it?
Please.

My biggest sucess was raising above severe Poverty.

My father left us when we were young and left my mother with 4 kids to raise and no skills to work. We managed on welfare and commodities through the 60's, and 70's. We are lots of beans and rice and cornmeal. We bought our clothes at thrift shops, read books only at libraries for entertainment, walked everywhere as we did not own a car, and we did not have normal meals we used to ration it out to each person. I still remember my mother buying a 1/2 gallon of ice cream (once in awhile) and opening the carton open and cutting the block into 5 equal protions. I guess that is why I love Ice Cream now as I can have as much as I want whenever I want. Life then was hard. We rented a home that was falling apart. The roof in the bedroom opened up above our bed and so we just moved the bed. I sleep with my mother and my 3 brothers shared a room, just no privacy. The plumbing was shot and our home always had mice or roaches. We could not get rid of them so my mother kept everything in boxes packed into the front room. She was a junk horder born out of poverty. She could not throw anything away.

It is hard for any child to grow up in this atmosphere. You hate your life, you do anything to escape (like stay as often as you can at friends homes) even hang out with bad crowds. You can never fit in with your peers (your clothes are ratty and outdated, and your fat from poor nutrition). School is all show and you can not shine, ever. No nikes, no prom dress, no money, nothing. We do what you can to survive, mentally and physically.
How did I do it? I decided home was bad and that I would perish there. I decided to spend as much time as I could with firends. Even though there lifestyles were not so grand. They had food there and a close family. I was staying out late, dating (no sex), and drinking alcohol. Anything to feel better. This went on thru my teens until I graduated High School.

Somehow I knew that only education could save me. I was in a program called "Upward Bound" through high school. It allowed my to take college classes and live in the dorms just outside my small town (7 miles away). That 7 miles was like a world away. It felt just like I was in europe. It changed my outlook on life and showed me a glimpse of what life was really like. I saw that an education is important to get ahead. I got into Police Science after hearing the head of the Department talk about it at a speak he did at my high school. I HAD MY MOTIVATION TO SUCCEED and I had a plan. I decided to go to college and not let anyone or anything stop me.

It worked. I went away to a University, met the man of my dreams (better than any date I had ever had), and graduated. He turned out to be wonderful, funny, happy-go-lucky, out-going and he loved me. I knew it would work. We left town and moved to his hometown, got jobs, got married and lived a great life. I could never understand how he told me he must OWN his own business and not work for someone else and make money for them. He wanted to make money for us. I never heard of this before. I thought everyone worked for someone else.

We went into business in 1977 and never looked back. Our money grew. We invested, we had two great kids, and we got into Real Estate as a sideline and later as a business. Things kept moving up for us. My husband was oposite from me. He grew up with wealth and liked to eat steak. I cooked caseroles. It took time for us to meet at the middle.

Now we are semi-retired in our 50's. Still married, two fine young men who never had to know of poverty and who made me proud each and every day. Our Real Esate Investments paid off and our pot of gold grew. We watched out spending and never went without. But we did not need the best of everything to feel good.
Life is grand. I look back on Misery and Stare it in the Face. I know poverty first hand. Now that I am worth a lot of money, I try to use it to help others. I still help my family and my mother who has little money coming in. I care for her and make sure she does not live badly.
I mentor teens. Tell them my story and help them prepare for their futures. I have been a volunteer for 30 years now and it is the best way to Give. Anyone can give money but giving your time to others is a blessing. If I can help one teen not have to suffer, that is my GOAL for the rest of my life.

In the end, Money is just Money. It is the relationships and love that counts the most. Ask me I know.

Just as having the correct to sue anybody for some thing does no longer imply you'll win your case, so writing approximately some thing does no longer imply that you are going to be released. The golden rule of authorship is to write down what you realize approximately, and such a lot humans are specialists on their possess lives. Many a prize-profitable autobiography has been written by way of humans who had in no way been heard of till the e-book got here out. "Angela's Ashes" is one such. Edit - Perhaps they're distinct matters, however they move in combination like a horse and carriage. My factor used to be that the writing of an exciting and acclaimed biography is an accomplishment in itself.

My greatest accomplishments have been promoting literacy. One youth in my neighbourhood was considered hopelessly challenged. I got him to count and learn basic words. One day he told me he could spell encyclopedia; and he did, getting it right. He had accepted the challenge of learning vocabulary.I would never have given him such a word yet; but by learning the word, he demonstrated that he could learn whatever he chose. He made a kite, learned to ride a bicycle and even mastered basic arithmetic computations. I learnt that as humans, we should not limit others for God has an ideal for each person and that which he expects is higher than the human thought can imagine.
