Halo 2 is on its way out. If you have a 360, Gears of War without question. If you don't, well, then Halo 2. But Gears is really passing up Halo, so if you want to have a great online experience, save the money and buy a 360. Its worth every penny, and wil give you the best results for the money (in terms of graphics and online). Sure, the PS3 has better graphics (or will have, I should say, cause right now their games are vastly inferior) but only if you buy a $3000+ TV. Its not even close to worth the money.
Bottom line: 360 + Gears of War kicks a$$

Gears of War is the most played game on Xbox live now and looks to be so till Halo 3 cvomes out as they are constanly updating it with new stuff all the time.
