Here's some ideas to "roll ya own" Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.
1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V)
I like the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test results are here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Updates many times per day to detect new malware.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
2. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 firewall)
An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.
And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............(use 2)
Pick and choose, 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
Spybot Search and Destroy:

Ewido:

Adaware SE:

SUPERAntiSpyware:

Windows Defender:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place............ (use them both)
SpywareBlaster:

SiteAdvisor:

Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!
Great luck!

There are some very good AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, Firewalls that are all free.
AOL has a Free Anti-Virus package. You do not have to join AOL to get it. It uses Kaspersky AV which is the best AV program. Kaspersky detects and removes 99+% of viruses in independent tests. AVG, AVAST, and other scored significantly lower. Generally, they scored in the mid 80% range.
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp
This download site has AVG, AVAST and a couple of other free AV programs. The are in the 3rd RED box down.
http://www.filehippo.com/
There are many free AntiSpyware programs. Be aware that most Free AS programs only work as "On Demand" scanners. You should have at least three AS programs that provide "Full Time" protection.
I use Windows Defender, Spybot Search and Destroy, and SpywareBlaster. Spybot must have the Tea Timer activated. Near the beginning of the download a window will appear. At the bottom will be the option to activate Tea Timer. Check the box. SpywareBlaster does not scan and remove infections. It monitors and blocks the infections from getting into your computer.
You can get these and other Free AS programs at the above linked site. They are also in the RED boxes.
Snapfiles is also a safe download site which also has free AV and AS programs.

My suggestion is to use a total security suite, from just 1 source. Norton has 1, and so does McAfee. I use McAfee Internet Security Suite. It has 8 differant protection devices on it: anivirus, antispy, firewall, parental controls, antiphishing, popup blocker, and 2 more that I can't think of right now. You can schedule scans, and you can even schedule it to perform disc cleanups and defragments automatitcally. It's easy to use. I got mine @ WalMart for $40. It works great. I've both read and heard from friends that both Norton and McAfee are the best in the business.
I keep seeing advice for all these freebies for antivirus and spyware. Keep in mind: You get what you pay for. This is especially true when it comes to ANY TYPE of software for your computer.

I install Avast on all my clients computers. Works great. Free for download @
http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3640-2239_4-10602417.html
This hasn't let anything through yet, I'm confident it won't.
Norton and McAfee leave files behind when uninstalled and cause the computer to run at VERY slow speeds because of background processes.
Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

Beware of free antivirus, some contain nasties.
For anti-spyware, Ad-Aware and Spybot are free, and widely recognised as being effective.
If you've got windows XP, service pack 2, it should have a firewall anyway.
