This only works if the people taking the break are doing it for the right reasons, and take those reasons serious.

The break should be taken so you can work on yourselves as individuals so you can come back together as a stronger unit.

It doesn't make the marriage grow stronger. It makes you grow stronger; helps you see what you really want out of it.

what are you saying exactly?Marriage is a commitment- good bad and the gray area...not some episode of friends like Ross and Rachel! Taking a break in marriage = break up! Work it out instead of sitting it out,c'mon, now!

Gee, it depends. If you need to cut out the horrible paterns, then taking a break might be needed just to reset, and watch out before certain patterns begin again.
If the idea is to cool it and then get back together without therapy, and both being able to admit to wrongs instead of pointing fingers, well then, the break just has to become permanent, hunh?

I would say your chances for getting a divorce are greater than your marriage growing stronger!

It depends on your version of taking a break. If you mean seeing other people in that process then I'd have to say no. If your referring to him being deployed, business trips etc....then I'd have to say yeah. Personally, that has saved my marriage on numerous occasions. Just simply being able to miss each other helps sometimes.

You don't take "breaks" in marriage; you work it out. That's what being committed to each other means.

It'll always bite you in the butt.

When I was a child, my father did that...23 years later, my parents divorced.

It was a significant point that helped my mother evaluate the interest she had in pursuing her relationship with my father. Eventually, she wanted to have a break too, permanently.

Absolutely not. Taking a break usually means getting away from the existing problems and not solving them. Problems will still exist when you get back from your break...if you come back from your break.
