In 1988 I bought a new 124 model Mercedes
with the 300 E engine and kept it to the present day. Vehicle has covered 425 k kilometers which equals 250 k miles. First engine, first
manual trans, second clutch and exhaust.
Had an early engine problem with worn valve guides, but this was sorted out by the factory in later models. Hydraulic lifters needed replacement at about 200k miles. There is some weakness in the airconditioning system.
I plan to keep the car until 500 k kilometers out of a personal ambition.
The paintwork of my car is still acceptable -
I have seen worse deterioration in later models. Generally, rust is a minor issue.

I'm assuming the stock rims are still on the 300E? If so, stock size is 195/65R15. The problem with that size is that it's not a very common size anymore on new vehicles and the choices from the tire manufacturers are not as varied as they once were. You will still find many tires in this size but the sportier ones have been phased by most tire companies. My personal recommendation would be the Michelin MXV4 Primacy if you want an all-season tire. It's longer lasting, smooth, fairly quiet, and has decent grip (although "decent" is relative when you're referring to all-season tires...generally speaking, a summer tire with softer compounds will handle much better compared to an all-season tire).

It depends. If you have the money to maintain one, it would be decent transportation. The problem is that most mechanics can't work on one - so you are stuck going to a specialty shop, or the dealer.

If it is a diesel, they can virtually run forever.

its a 16-year old import, not a reccomended car, its seen its day, and when and if it does break down, it will be expencive to repair, any car made 76 and after are not built to last, sad to say, if ever buying a car do not buy any older than 5 years, unless made before 76.
