Without going into to much detail of how exactly is transmits the information back and forth...an ethernet cable, also known as an RJ45 cable is one of several ways to connect your computer to the internet, a network, or other computers.

You'll have a network card on your computer where you plug one side of the ethernet cable into. You'll plug the opposite side into a cable or DSL modem to connect it to the internet. Same can be done with a network, and if you are at college you can connect it right into the wall (It looks a little bigger than a regular phone cord jack).
