I am trying to make a blanket and when I start to crochet, the yarn that has already been crocheted starts to curl up and spiral around. It will not stay straight. Why is this?

It's pretty normal, yarn is twisted fiber and in the crochet process you'll wind up twisting it more ... sometimes releasing the yarn to allow it to be natural will help. Some yarns are better than others, and typically once you finish a project you can block it, found in most crochet instructions (dampen project and lie flat to dry) or if it's washable the fibers will typically set themselves. A lot of times after the project is done just folding it and letting it "rest" the curls will go away. Since you say you've got a loose stitch then don't worry ... I've had this with many projects and it's not uncommon at all .... just keep working and you'll see,

I have before but I really haven't been at a point like that in my life for awhile now. But I definitely can relate and I'm sure that I will go through that again as I'm sure you will to and so will most people here on earth. We all experience hard times in just different forms. Although I can say that after a Good cry I feel so relaxed and calm.

could be the texture of the yarn, like some kinds of yarn are better for crocheting than others. something else that could help is holding the yarn differently, like i usually hold the already corcheted stuff with my right hand pinkie and ring finger, and i've never had that problem, but then again it could be the yarn. hope i helped.

As long as you're not crocheting too tightly, you should be able to fix the problem. When you finish the blanket, steam block it to the correct measurements.

How many rows have you done? If it's just one or two it's probably nothing to worry about. It will flatten as you add more rows.
Also, make sure you are not increasing any stitches. That will make it curl too.

Its normal, at least for me. Don't worry about it- as you progress, the curling will stop. The chain is either tighter or looser then the rest of your stitches, and thats whats making it curl. Its nothing to worry about- it will fix itself and not show later. Happy hooking!

You might be crocheting to tight

it's probably because you're making it too tight.
