Although the Little Red-Haired Girl is never seen, nor is her name even mentioned, she is still crucial to the strip. Not only does she provide a recurring comic theme, but Charlie Brown's hapless schoolboy crush on her is a part of his personality to which nearly all readers can relate, so it makes him seem more real.

The 1977 animated TV special It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown depicted the Little Red-Haired Girl on camera and stated that her name was Heather; she was voiced by Michelle Muller. She appeared again on camera in the 1985 special Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!. Schulz did not consider these animated appearances to be canonical. Officially, she remains unseen and unnamed.

In the animated special "It's Your First Kiss Charlie Brown" the girl's name is given as Heather. However, this was not authorized by Charles Schultz. Officially, she has never been given a name.
