I am American and I like Jpop. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side so if you are Japanese you will probably like a lot of American music.

I personally don't like the way Japanese musicians slide all over the notes when they sing. Makes me cringe. I have heard very little of anything creative or original in J-pops. I think J-rock is awful -- nothing redeeming about it and not original either. I think since there are not a huge audience for Japanese music, there isn't a lot of demand and the standards are not high. I mean, any cute girl with a short skirt can become an "idol" in Japan and people think the kid actually has talent! But when these people try to swim with the sharks by competing with U.S. or British artists, they don't stand a chance -- because they have NO TALENT. Most of what I've seen in Japan would be laughed silly even on something like American idol where half the contestants trying out could sing circles around most J-pops artists. Sorry, but that is the way I see it.

I was talking to a friend about Japanese popular music. Everything we have heard is very sad, interesting but sad. J-pop and J-rock, well nothing too special. And yes, Death metal is better.

Spitz Sukima Switch - these two are my top favourites. Also, Oku Hanako (lyrical ballads) Kajiura Yuki L'Arc~en~Ciel Uverworld FLOW DOES Asian Kung Fu Generation Scandal (females, but honestly I don't like this band) Suga Shikao (almost as good as Spitz) T.M. Revolution Stereopony (a very likeable band) Nobodyknows+ Utada Hikaru (can't say anything, haven't heard her songs, but my firend loves it) Shibasaki Kou (a very good deep female voice, though pretty pop) Ayaka (well, her best quality is that she's married to Mizushima Hiro :) ) I don't really like Visual Kei bands (except for L'Arc en Ciel).

The only Japanese music I've heard sounded rather sad. My neighbors are Japanese, and I learn alot about their culture through their family

Japanese pop and rock are annoying, but Japanese music in general is good.

I listen to M.O.V.E. and I think they're a pretty good group. They have some songs I really like and some I don't like so much, just like any other group no matter what style. I also listen to metal as well as classical. It all depends on the song.

What I have heard, I liked. Some of it is very odd, but unlike other Asian pop cultures, it's unique and challenging.
Koreans, the Chinese (HK, PRC and Taiwan), the Philippines, and most others play safe, lame, US-wannabe crap. At least J-pop (as some call it) is different.
The best Asian pop music, though, is from Thailand. It has a very European influence, rather than a Yank influence, and they mix in their traditional melodies.

got to agree with you.
jpop and jrock are boring.
i don't think any death metal lover would ever like j-rock.
they spend too much time on their hair, make up and cloth rather than concentrate on the real music.

Japanese music is kick-butt.
I don't like American music, it's too similar.
At least Japanese music is variety and has meaningful lyrics..
To each his own~
