Glass of wine 5 days before period was due - negative pregnancy test. Then was sad so I had a glass of wine - did not even finish it. That was my only alcohol and will be until I give birth. Will my child have fetal alcohol syndrome?

The risk of your baby being born with FAS is NEXT TO ZERO. But you are right to stop.

It is NOT OKAY to even lightly imbibe while pregnant.
It is clear that FASD is only 100% preventable when pregnant women ABSTAIN from drinking alcohol. PERIOD.

Why take the risk? Is drinking that important?

If you wouldn't serve your toddler an alcoholic beverage, you should not serve it to your developing fetus.

National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome:
"No safe time. No safe amount. No safe alcohol. Period."

FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders) affects 1 in 100 live births or as many as 40,000 infants each year. This is completely preventable. FASD is not genetic and the babies would be born healthy otherwise. We should all be upset at the answers you have received regarding drinking while pregnant.

"While it is apparent that children who meet the criteria for full-blown FAS are born to those mothers who consume large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy, studies have reported a wide range of neurological damage, neurobehavioral deficits and intrauterine growth retardation in infants born to mothers who were only light alcohol consumers during pregnancy."

You are a wise, caring mom to be concerned... continue with your good sense and abstain from drinking :o)

nope one glass of wine won't have harmed the baby at all. there are a lot of women who drink while pregnant before they even know they are. my sister got completely trashed 2 weekends in a row before she found out she was pregnant but of course after finding out she didn't drink anymore AT ALL until after the baby was born. the little one was 100% fine...just had a slightly low birth weight (5lbs 14oz). That apparently isn't a big deal now that we think of it though. She is now a year old & can still wear much smaller clothes but according to the doctor she's the correct weight for her age, it's just that she's petite like her mommy was when she was little.

Btw, if you smoke I would quit! Do NOT quit cold turkey cause that can actually harm the baby.....just slow down until you quit. A friend of mine smoked quite a bit (menthol too!) during her pregnancy & that ended up disasterous. The baby had to stay in the hospital for a little while because she wouldn't stop crying & tests had confirmed that she was majorly suffering from nicotine withdrawl. That poor little one :-(

Oh, dear. No.

And the people saying you can keep imbibing _very_ lightly are right, too.

"The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recently conducted a large study including 400,000 American women, all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy. Not a single case of fetal alcohol syndrome occurred and no adverse effects on children were found when consumption was under 8.5 drinks per week. 3

A recent review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day. 4"

It is highly unlikely. Children w/fetal alcohol syndrome come from pregnancies where the mother drank continuously either every day or off and on through out the entire pregnancy while vital organs and body parts were forming. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Your baby will not have fetal alocohol syndrome unless you drink loads of alcohol during pregnancy. A glass of wine here and there is perfectly fine while you're pregnant.

Congratulations on the baby :-)

No it won't have fetal alchohol syndrom. Its fairly common before you know that you are pregnant to have had a bit of alcohol. Fetal alchol syndrom occurs when you are a chronic drinker/alcholic

I don't think so....because I think that it requires more than half a glass of alcohol consumption. Besides, people drink way more than that and it still doesn't happen.

You are fine. One drink throughout the pregnancy is not enough to cause FAS. Even if you had a glass of wine every day throughout your pregnancy it still would not be enough to cause FAS. (Although I wouldn't take that chance!) FAS is caused by a woman drinking large amounts on a regular basis during pregnancy.

No your child will not
Most studies of FAS are based upon women that drink daily and more than one drink (usually four).
Your baby will be just fine.
Good luck and Congratulations
