you should be able to borrow them from the hospital physiotherapy department.

Hi i worked for the A/E dept, physio dept and the plaster room. You cannot borrow them from the gps surgery they do not issue this there,if you have an injury the best thing to do is to get a letter from your gp some hospitals will ask for this if you are not a out patient, take this to either one off these depts and thy should issue you with a pr off crutches on loan. They will also ask for your details eg,name and address, phone number this is to make sure you give the crutches bck as 1 pair off crutches are about £30.00-£35.00 to buy.If you want more advice email me.

I've broken my ankle, and was given crutches at A&E. Also borrowed a wheelchair from the Red Cross for a donation.

In most parts of the UK, you should ask your GP to refer you to the hospital Physiotherapy department for an assessment.
Social Services do not provide mobility aids; that area is covered by the NHS.

GP's don't have crutches to give out, your best bet is to go to A&E as they can give you some if they feel you'll need them. I work as a porter at a hospital so that's how I know.

RE:
Can I get crutches from my local GP?
I've been told that I can't get free crutches from the NHS, but I don't want to buy any. Now i've been told I can, but can I get them from my local doctors surgery?

I am assuming you are self diagnosing your need for these crutches since ordinarily a patient that needs them is either given them at time of injury or they are given a prescription for them to get at a medical supply. You could ask your doctor to prescribe a pair but you may not convinice them to do that if they don't see a real need for them.

Yes you can get them free but not from your local GP. A hospital can provide these (as long as you give them back!).
