I keep hearing stuff, such as the majority of her fans are gays. Is this true or just hearsay? Is it because her daughter is lesbian? If so, then why isn't Dick Cheney a house name in the gay world.

Oh yes, she has a gay son. I got mixed up with Mary Cheney there, sorry. I asked this question because I didn't understand why Barbra Streisand, Cher, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Disneyland were all synonymous with gays. Now I know it's because they are divas (still don't understand the Disneyland association though).

Well, she is a diva. It doesn't hurt her daughter is a lesbian...but ultimately...it has been stereotypically implied that gay men love the divas...Celine Dion, Cher, etc. Cheney is a Republican...and no one wants to be associated with him...especially the gay community

To correct you on something, she doesn't have a lesibian daughter, she has a gay son. As far as why she is an icon, I would hope that it's because she gives back to the community by contributing to AIDS or GLBT charities. You would have to ask someone else this to know for sure though.

Barbra has a son Jason that is gay, she is very supportive of him and the gay community as a whole. I don't believe she has a daughter. Jason's father is Elliot Goule, her first husband.

Her career started in teh Village in NY. She was booed off stage intially due to her "looks". Eventually she was drawing in big crowds in NYC on Broadway..then Hollywood. In those days the Village was the "gay" scene so-to-speak.
Barbara does not have a daughter. She has one son "Jason". He is gay.

Just wagering a guess...
2 things come to mind. Firstly, she made that movie about crossdressing called 'Yentil' (forgive my spelling) and her flashy, diva-ish stage persona seems to lend itself to the stereotypical gay community.
I may be TOTALLY off base with that. If I offended anyone, it was not meant that way!
