I have a Directv dvr. It has a usb port in the front. Can I connect my laptop to the dvr and transfer the shows?

I don't think you can use the USB port b/c that is for connecting USB devices to the TIVO (which is itself a computer inside). You can play it out to a capture device, like that you use for tape based video cameras - Pinnacle makes a good and inexpensive one. Just beware, the files created through this capture method will be large (Gigs) unless you downgrades the quality.

You could also play it (and assumedly record it) using a slingbox to throw your Tivo output to a browser over the internet.

I think if you put the USB port in the laptop and you have eyeTV you can download it to eyeTV
