What is the summer program about? Sometimes the best thing to do is research the program, see what the objective and mission statement is and use that for your opening. For example, if I was applying to Space Institute Summer Program and their objective was to research technology for future space travel my opening would be something like:

The Space Institute is a renowned facility for the research of futuristic technologies. In particular the Institute is focused on space travel, which is of great interest to me. I believe that the Space Institute will allow me to broaden my horizons in this field as I have already made many efforts to do independant research and hope to have a more structured experience from the summer program and learn from the most renowned rocket scientists from around the world.

Basically what I am saying is use information that is already given to you and reword it to say why you are applying, why you are the ideal candidate, to show you have an interest and also to show that you have research the organization/school that you are applying to!

In your first paragraph state in an original fashion your ideas.
First sentence - say "I would like to attend the Whatever program because it wil be an ( say a statement that summarizes all of your idea)". An essay to enter something is similar to the writing style of a short story.

Make an outline.
Thesis statement: I am interested in attending the summer program for the following reasons:
A. Reason #1.
1. supporting statement to reason #1.
2.supporting statement to reason #1.
B. Reason #2
1. supporting statement to reason #2
2. supporting statement to reason#2
C. Reason #3
1. supporting statement to reason#3
2.supporting statement to reason#3
Conclusion
You may have more reasons and more supporting statements.. or less... but you get the picture... organize your thoughts first... make a skeleton (outline), then put the meat on the bones... write the essay off of your outline. Hope that helps some.

OK, start with outlining your statements.
I am interested for this summer program for several reasons such as (give reasons). Then write a paragraph on each reason (unless they are similar, then combine them into 1 paragraph).

get all your main ideas down and start organizing it. just start writing and it'll end up coming together. its called writing a crappy first draft first so you get all your ideas down and know what you want to say then start developing it into an essay..
its a lot less stressful this way cuz you kinda forget that your writing
