Let me answer by asking you a question. How could it hurt heterosexual marriage?
It will not interfere in the least with "straight" relationships, those who want children, divorce rates among "straight" people, Christian and other religious beliefs, or anything I can think of.
Gay and lesbian marriage would only help those who truely love each other to make a life-long commitment to each other. Since, at present, divorce rates among "straight" couples is close to 60%, what difference will "gay" marriage make?
I get so sick of the "moral majority" trying to impose their belief system on the rest of us. We "immoral" majority pay taxes, support the economy, pay bills, vote, have families, bleed, and just try to live peacefully and as happily as we can, just like everyone else. No, I am not gay. I have had two divorces, many relationships that ended badly (heterosexual), was once a fundamentalist Christian (no longer), and have a belief system that is right for me. I have been living with a man for 10 years in a heterosexual relationship. We have a "common-law" marriage except in states that have declared this illegal. He had a stroke a few years ago. I have been by his side, helping him through recovery, taking jobs when he couldn't support us, helped him with his bills, etc. How is our relationship any worse than yours, except we decided not to support the government and lawyers anymore by being legally married. Why should we have less rights? The same can be said for homosexual relationships.

Equal rights, yup that is a definite con.
I don't see it really making a difference either way. Heterosexuals have already destroyed the sanctity of marriage as treating it as a temporary arrangement. Perhaps a way to pay less taxes or legitimize a child. I am not to sure, regardless we have an inexcusable divorce rate. And already treat the sanctity of marriage as a temporary arrangement or disposable agreement.
I am hoping gay marriage will refresh the rest of us as to why marriage is so sacred,
