Have you read Lee Child's "The Hard Way" or "Killing Floor"? They are fast-paced, action/military novels that are well-written and are gripping from start to finish, with Jack Reacher, ex-soldier and reluctant hero, as the main character. Lee Child has written lots of others but these two really stand out in my opinion!

James Rollins is great (attempt Map of Bones) as are Lincoln baby and Douglas Preston (I enjoyed the cabinet of Curiosities and nonetheless existence With Crows). Alot of action and suspense. perhaps greater character progression yet rather speedy reads that i could not placed down from begining to end.

What about Anthony Horrowitz, Clive Cussler or Sean Young?

Not sure if the style matches but the genre should.
