I have a mini-dirt bike from Honda that looks like it was built in the 70's. Porbably just a 50cc motor, maybe smaller. On the engine block, it reads "QA50E-4" under that it is stamped "001401". I am trying to find a manual to repair this bike for my son. Thanks.

Guessing from the numbers that you gave it is a 50cc engine but as far as the year is anybodys guess, I would take it to a Honda dealer and see what they say about it.

Look on the downtube which is the part of the frame leading from the front of the engine down to the bottom part of the engine. there should be a plate welded or riveted to the frame with the honda serial number and the year. Good Luck!

Honda web page here. http://powersports.honda.com/index.asp?bhcp=1

Look on the left fork for a plate with a VIN and year.
