unless it's pocked with craters, I can't really see how one's gluteus maximus even remotely resembles our lunar sattelite .. there must be another answer!

It's called mooning because of tan lines. I'm sure you've seen somebody that's got a tan, but their *** is still lilly white - like the moon - thus the term!

This term became popular in the 60's.
Mooning was real polular in the 60's and 70's at colleges. Those living in the dorms used to get attention my "mooning" others. It started with the guys mooning the girls and then it got to where everyone was doing it, out windows of cars, dorm room windows, down the street, at parties and more.
It got that name bacause the butt is round hense like the moon.
Please dont do it nowadays it is not in good taste.
