The scions are really good. Also inexpensive. I have a XB. My niece as the XA. You can go to the scion web site to look and get prices. The list price is what you pay. My dealer ( Longo Toyota) added Sirius radio for free. So check around. Good Luck.

Are my parents buying the car, or am i buying the car? Are they paying for maintenance or are you?
Personally, if my parents were going to buy me a car, hands down id get a 1991 ferrari f40. Personally, i think thats the best car ever made, it is the supercar of supercars.
are you looking for something affordable?
Whats your price range? can you afford a new mercedes, a new mitsubishi, or a new daewoo?
Are you looking for the most reliable car, are you wanting a stylish car, the cheapest new car you can get, or the safest?
Im going to assume a few things:
Your buying a car in america
You/your parents make the median wage, $48,000ish
Your looking for a affordable, low maintenance, used car.
So we will go from there.
I have never been a honda fan (performance wise), but hands down, they make the most reliable car in america. Its cheap to fix, every mechanic will work on them, and you can pretty much pull into any autozone and buy replacement parts.
Being said, I also have to give you a recommendation of a mid 90s geo prizm. I found a 96 prizm on ebay 3 years ago for $1400. It 90,000 miles, but still had a long life left. I owned a 93 probe gt, which is my project car, i also owned a 2001 ford ranger 4x4, which is my winter truck, my old lady owns a 2006 honda accord, but for $1400, it would make a great daily driver. So i picked it up, and of course did your routine maintenance, and for a full tranny/coolant/oil/brake/ and power steering flush and refill, it cost $200.
After 3 years and 60,000, ive replaced the starter and battery. I cannot believe how well this car is made. I am a very hard driver. I have replaced the transmission on probe 3 times, ive replaced the engine twice (the third time was a klze swap, so im not counting that).
My brothers girlfriend also has a 96 prizm with 226,000 miles, and she has yet to replace anything.
So taking reliability/price into account, these are the top choices.
Honda Civic/Accord
Geo prizms
80s volvo
90s vw rabbit

The one that best fits your specific needs. Not necessarily desires, but needs. You need a non sports car or your insurance will be sky high. Well, it will be anyway, given your lack of a driving record, (hopefully no tickets), but why make it any higher. You want something half way reliable, not so old as to break down every week, but not so new as to increase your rates.
You want something small enough to not use a lot of fuel, but big enough to be safe to drive. Ask your insurance agent for advice of which vehicles are less to insure, then look at that list. Probably be things like Toyota, Taurus, then find one in your price range. Please have the one you decide on checked by your mechanic before you commit to it.
Good luck.
