No, they are not being overly protective. I have been assaulted and it is terrifying. What's this about only being 110 pounds, what, you'd just give in 'cause you're too light-weight to fight? BS! Know how to fight back...do not admit that you would just be a victim or you will be! Self defense classes, by the way, do more than empower you physically, they empower you emotionally and mentally as well. Do it do it do it. Rape is awful.

"5 ft 6 and 110 pounds so I can't do much anyway"
I takes 9 lbs of pressure to break a human bone.
Your legs have the largest muscles in your body and are supporting your 110 lbs which is over 10 times the strength they need to break a human bone.
Arm locks can disable an aggressor with almost no effort.
You are as dangerous a force to be reckoned with as you see yourself. I would take the class just to get some perspective o your abilities. Please remember to ask your instructor for "practical uses" of what you learn because in many martial art dojos they will focus more on form than practical use. A simple metal pen is an excellent puncture weapon if you can commit yourself to use it.
If at the least learn a pop front kick because it will instantly tell anyone around you that you know how to do some damage and that you are not an easy target.

I have taught numerous self defense classes for women. I am not trying to open a can of worms here but understand that many martial arts schools train for compitition with uniforms, judges, and definded boundries and it has little to do with a serious encounter on the street.
That being said, few females grow up playing contact sports. The normally don't play any serous footbal, box, wrestle or simply roughhouse like guys do. So many females simply have not developed the motor skills to to properly strike and many females react poorly to when they see someone take a swing at them. For those reasons I strongly believe that almost any female, and a lot of males will gain a great deal from regular practice in a martial arts class. However I will also tell you that most martial arts demands a certain level of physcal fitness and constant practice to be good at them.
I would take the classes. Get a feel for them. Also remember that not all schools and instuctors are all things to all people. There are many schools that concentrate on the sports aspect and do little in the way of legitimate self defense training. And there is nothing wrong with that if you are looking to get into the sport which is a lot of fun and will get you in good shape.
A serious compteitor can normally take care of him or her self in most situation, but you will respond how you train and if train for sport you will resond to an attack by attempting to score a point. This type of resonse is well documented. Your concsious thought process will be superseeded by the subconcious and training takes over. So the roundhouse kick to the chest that will get you a point is not as good a fight stopper as a stomp to the kneecap.
My oldest daughter is also in collage and she has had 4 years of martial arts training and is quite good. But she realized that needs to move over to a simpler, more brutal type of action that what she was trained for.
Best of luck to you.

Don't let you size decieve you.
A nose can be broken with only 8 lbs of force.
A good form of Martial arts is Judo. It is a defensive based style.
For attacking the Gracey style that is used in UFC (Ground and pound) is very good and it doesn't take a great deal of strength. A person can be choked out in minutes!

Self-defence classes are a lot better than they sound. They make you feel stronger, quicker, and more powerful. Once you know how defend yourself, you'll never need anyone to do it for you. I started learning karate at thirteen, when I had to catch buses downtown, where there are a lot of drunks lurking about. I have my green belt now. I say, go for it.

You are correct, in part. Any of the hard arts, karate, tai quan do, are good but yo have to be really good to take out some body big. Things like aikido or aiki-jujitsu are designed for the smaller person and they are called the softer arts. If you watch any of the old Steven Segal movies that is what he uses. A small person can put a big person on the ground and in pain. Believe me it works.

It'll never hurt to do it! If ever one day you do need to defend yourself, you'll be wishing you did take that class! And its not about size, a little girl can take down a big guys if you know where to hit them.

You should go. I'm 4'11" and 97 pounds. And I have a black belt in tae kwon do. You would not believe what you can do to people much bigger/stronger than you. It's always good to be prepared.

They might be fun and you should definitely learn to defend yourself--everyone male or female shoudl be able to.
Even smaller people can learn good techniques to keep themselves safe!
