As several people have already said, the days of the week are from the visible planets, Sun, and Moon (the English names are from the Germanic mythologies, but if you know the days of the week in Spanish or French, for example, you can easily see the resemblance to the planet names.
The ancients could only see 5 planets - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These are the planets that are visible to the naked eye. (Earth is visible to the naked eye - look down! - but the ancients didn't know Earth was a planet like the others.) It's interesting to wonder if we would have 8 days in a week if the planet Uranus was bright enough to be easily seen by the naked eye (it's just barely too faint for most people to see).

Sunday is literally named after the sun (our star) -- but the ancient idea of the sun as a god.
Monday is "moonday" -- same thing, named after the moon god.
The rest of the week is astronomical in origin as well -- here's a good explantion (link below).

I was always taught they were the names of Greek gods; however, I don't recollect being taught when, or how they were named those names.

Do you mean what they're named after, or why they were named that? Either way, you can find the answer here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days_of_the_week
