My sister is 20 yrs old and was caught shoplifting in a department store. The total of what she stole was 300 dollars. She was given a court summons and needs to know what will be happening. She doesn't have a lawyer

You wouldn't be worrying about this if she hadn't of stolen stuff. What's that saying, "don't do the crime if you can't pay the time"

She will be going in front of a judge, where the detectives who investigated her case and or police/store security people will make their case to charge her with theft. She may have to come back to plead (guilty or not guilty), if she pleads guilty she would have to come back for trial.

Get a lawyer.

tell her to get a lawyer, odds are if it is her first offense she will recieve some type of probation and a fine. without an attorney she could be facing a short jail sentence.
