First of all befor you decide on any animal RESEARCH!!! some by-laws forbid having certain animals as pets. For example in Ontario (where I live) it's illegal to have sugar gliders as pets, And in Alberta it's illegal to have rats as pets.

That said, what pet you get should depend on your lifestyle. For example do you want a small animal that can be left alone for a while or do you have the time to spend an hour or more a day simply socializing with you new pet? And what do you want to have to clean? Ex. I have 6 rats, I clean their (very large) cage 2 times a week. Then I know people who only have 2 rats and only need to clean their cage once a week. But with rats you shouyld NEVER get less then 2 and they need a large cage (minimum size 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet for a pair), it's the same with other animals like degus, or ferrets. and some animals should never have more then one in a cage like rabbits that get very teritorial, or hamsters.

I haven't had any "strange" pets, but sugar gliders are rather rare and my sister wanted one for a very long time. It would also be pretty impressive to have a chamelion, a friend of ours had one and it was SO cool!

The most important thing, though, is what gitana_diosa said: REASEARCH! Never get a pet without learning about it and preparing your home for it.

Good luck!

I would research the animal first and make sure it is legal to own where you live, but here are some you may want to look at.
Reptilies:
ball python
iguana
kenya sand boa
jackson camillion

Mammals(small & caged)
rats
sugar gliders
chinchillas
degues

Mammals(will some free time in your house)
Raccoons
skunks
ferrets

There are also many others, but please research the animal before you buy. There is alot of cost to some exotics. They have specific food and housing needs. You also need to spend time with all of them out of their cages at least 1-2 hours a day, and some will do better if you get 2. You also need to know if there is a vet in your area that can see them. I hope this helped and good luck. Please, please research any animals that interest you.

depending on what you are looking for I would say a ferret, they are like cats , but will be strange enough to suit most needs for it.
if you want something creepy , then go for a scorpion or tarantula. both are great to have, and they are definitely strange by most peoples standard.
if you go with the spider, a rose hair tarantula is a good one to start with. make sure you read up on them, they take more to keep than you think.
if the scorpion is more your speed, then get an emperor. they look and act a lot nastier than they really are , though I wouldn't ever suggest handling it with bare skin.
on a side note, if you are allergic to bees, then don't get either invertebrate. they are both venomous, and it is more likely that you will be allergic to them if you react to bee stings. stay safe with your pets.
hope this helps.

What about a Hermit Crab, they are about as strange as you can get. They don't eat much (pellets) they climb all over things, their clean, low maintenance and as they grow they discard their old house and move into a new one, so your pet will keep a bit of variety in you life.
Owh by the way they hibernate in winter.

i recommend a chinchilla!
They are fun, really cute, and really soft. But there are three things you should know about them first:
1.) they are nocturnal, so it will sleep throughout most of the day and be awake all night playin around in its cage
2.) They chew on EVERYTHING in sight
3.) They poop EVERYWHERE and a lot, but the poop comes out in hard little pellets so its easy to clean up.

Lol other than that they are friendly and super adorable.

A Chinese Crested puppy. They're a VERY unusual breed of dog.
