What are your plans for the new system? This the most important question because pc are built to do certain function cater to the outlook of the user. Are you a gamer? Do you do heavy graphics programs, or do you use it just for word processing? You need to have a direction that you want go when working on a pc, the more you know about your expectations the better a tech can cater your system. Basic system are good but eventually need upgrade and expansion to get what the user needs out of it.

I've been hearing really good things about Dell lately, and my son just got a new Dell and he's thrilled with the deal he got. They've got a great reputation for good help desk support (customer service). Whatever you do, don't go with Compaq. I've had two, one was a laptop and the other a desktop--both were nightmares for technical problems!

I have an Emachine, and for the past three years have had no problems. They sell them at Walmart and such. I know there are other manufactures, Dell and such that are also just fine. One little tip, to save a couple of coins, go to the website, they have "re-manufacture computers" fancy term for ones they fixed, for a lower price. I think most companies offer computers like your looking for, kind of standard now. Best of luck, chow.

Everex, Acer, Dell, Compaq. I owuld go with Compaq for two reasons.
1. They have combined with HP, which is also a good brand but can get pricy.
2. They are very quiet and fast.

Dell is an excellent computer that won't break the bank. It is fairly reliable. Gateway also put out a pretty good computer. Dell will build one for you with whatever bells and whistles you want.

dell are good new or used, the reconditioned/returned computers go for very cheap and usually only have something silly like a scratch to their casing that drops them by a few hundred $! worth a shot :)
