If your legal name is on the check, then of course you can. There are no laws in cashing a check given to you.

you should be able to cash it..... as long as it has your name address, and maybe a Social security number on it.... You could always try calling the place that sent it to you. Your county probably was looking over your records and noticed that they owed you money.

Maybe you should take a ride into the county and find out before you cash it.

Sure, you can cash it...and when you find out it isn't yours, you can pay it back. But I would suggest trying to find out first. Funny, I got a check in the mail from my insurance co. for missing jewelry...I was tempted, but couldn't. Besides, they called ME the next day!

a letter should have been included advising you what it was for. I would find out what it is for before cashing. You don't want them to come a year later saying, they paid you in error, and then have interest added to it as well.

Is it made out to YOU? Does it have your name on it? If not, certainly do not cash it.

BUt regardless, you should keep trying to contact them to find out, because if it is a mistake, they may try to get those funds back.
