Setting up a similar site is very easy(technically). but providing sellers and buyers confidence is much difficult and will require excellent sells drive/promotional steps from your side, and it will definitely take longer to establish than you are thinking. Cross your fingers and start. And if you are looking for any technical help, do contact me.

There are a LOT of factors in the expense. First would be the cost of purchasing the domain name. (www.something.com) Very inexpensive.

Then there are costs of hosting the domain. This can be inexpensive to very expensive - depending on traffic. Just for an idea, check out yahoo - small business.

Then you have to design and build your site. This could be cheep, if you have the knowlege of how to do it yourself or expensive, if you have to pay someone else to do it.

Then you have to have a way to accept payments... Visa, MC, Paypal, etc.

Then you have to figure out how to promote it and do so. This could be really expensive. eBay started out small, and grew mostly through word-of-mouth. Now, when anyone thinks of on-line auctions, they think of eBay - priceless. You'd have to figure out how to get your name out there.... Advertising is not cheep!

So, if you want to compete with eBay, you've got a tough road to head down. If you just want to sell something, why not just list it on eBay or some other auction site??

No, you can kind of do it for free. There is this free web builder called fusiveweb. you can sign up and make a webby for absolutlely free. it can become where you sell things but i'm not sure about the bidding. You have to have a paypal account or something similar to start selling stuff.
Just visit www.fusiveweb.co.uk.
