Elvis's early music (from the 50's) is really fantastic. He wasn't the only originator or rock n' roll, but he was a major force in its creation and early development. Important records from this period are 'Hound Dog' 'All Shook Up' and 'Don't Be Cruel'

Unfortunately, most of what he did during the 60's was garbage. His manager decided to refocus his career away from music and towards film; the songs he did record during this time were all (or mostly) done in service of whatever embarassingly crappy movie he was working on at the time. Representative records from this period are 'Return to Sender' and 'Devil in Disguise.'

It wasn't until the early 70's that Elvis started to regain creative control over his career and musical output and he recorded some excellent records right before he died such as 'Suspicious Minds' and 'In the Ghetto'

Elvis was a very talented performer and interpreter, and I think much of the negative impressions people have of him are mostly due to his mid-career work.
